An order entering final judgment in the lawsuit filed against Kingsley Elikpo, aka Zeez, by his record label, HF Music sometime last year, has now been granted in favour of the record label which now houses the fast-rising Afro-Pop artiste, bIgLITTLE.
The presiding judge in the case brought before the High Court of Lagos State, Honourable Justice B.A. Oke-Lawal (Mrs), ordered that Zeez should refund to the label the sum of N22,378,605.70 (Twenty-Two Million, Three Hundred and Seventy-Eight Thousand, Six Hundred and Five Naira and Seventy Kobo) being the total amount HF Music spent on him through various advances made to and on his behalf, from the commencement date of his contract with the label until the point when it was breached by him.
This judgment is expected to have serious implications on the Nigerian music industry as record label owners and investors will now feel safe investing in artistes, knowing that their investment is protected. On the other hand, artistes are expected to now sit-up and take their contractual obligations more serious, knowing that breaching their contracts might turn out to be a career ending move.
We have tried in futility to get both HF Music and Zeez to comment on the court judgment, and bigLITTLE who we were able to reach via phone declined to comment.
